Dire Hibiscus Coast wine lists.... 18 October 2005
You're right about the Hibiscus Coast 's wine lists!
Dire doesn't even begin to describe them. There used to be a couple of
places that tried a bit harder than the rest (Friar Tuck in Margate and
The Bistro at Ramsgate) but change of ownership takes its toll... I
hope you met Vic Bard, the butcher who has his Blue Bottles wine shop in
his butchery at Surf Bay, near St Mike's - he has an amazing selection
of Cape wines on his shelves, as good as and arguably better than better
known outlets in Durban. He deserves all the support he can get! |

Comment from Tina Bell: Please try a new restaurant called Blues in Margate the food is delicious, choice jazz music playing in the background and a great selection of wine. (They won a Diners award for the wine list.) Now if we can get the bottle stores to stock the wine and get the South Coasters to be a little bit more adventurous. There are two other great spots in Umtentweni, Zizi's Restaurant and Saffron on 3rd. Thanks for a great mag.
