A Gary Player wine?

Barry Brown asks:
Have just watched a program on DSTV re SA wine and the involvement of top Golfers as David Frost and Ernie Els. They had a tasting of a 'Gary Player'-labelled wine which supposedly cost UK POUNDS 200.

This was the first I'd heard of this, but a web search revealed that there is a Gary Player website, which contained the following information:

For the last few years, red wine blends to be marketed under the Gary Player label have been aging in French oak barrels at Quoin Rock in Stellenbosch, outside Cape Town, South Africa. Winemaker Carl van der Merwe, who has remained insistent that the wine not be released until it reached utmost quality, recently granted approval for the wine to be bottled.

The first of three brands to be launched will be the Gary Player Major Championship series, representing each of Player’s 18 major championships. The winemaker will release only one blend during an exceptional year, the first of which will commemorate the 1959 Open Championship at Muirfield. Two other labels – the Grand Slam & Clubhouse Red – will also be marketed under the Gary Player brand.

If anyone has had sight or taste of a bottle or its price tag, please let us know.

Barry Brown wrote in to say that he'd just watched a TV programme (1 March) on the subject, called ‘Le tour de connoisseur' – a 1 hour 'very light / humorous wine show' featuring 'fabulous / very posh locations in UK, France, RSA etc'. Here are the rest of his laconic comments on the programme:

Point was the high incidence of  ‘top’ SA Golfers getting into wine production / sales i.e. David Frost, Ernie Els and now Gary Player. Group of celebrities commenting on the reasons for this and whether the wines reflected their personality and were worth the money ? Celebs as e.g. British Comedian Kenny Lynch and Nick Mallet all of who knew the players reasonably well. Some wine makers / buffs interviewed, one of whom wondered why Gray at his age would want to get involved, wine being a long term project.

Ernie questioned re whether this is an ‘elitist / ego trip’. = Wife the driver. Wine is not an elitist thing.Celebs asked why they thought these golfers wanted to get into wine = Definitely financial. Possibly also because as multi-millionaires it is what other multi-millionaires do.

Much mention of ‘Limited / Signed Editions’, and as far as Gary’s wine goes – a £200 price tag. The wines were classy, obviously young (especially Gary’s) and would benefit from laying down.
