Finding hanepoot in Oregon 3 September 2006

Clark Lampson writes:
I live in Oregon, USA, and would like to obtain hanepoot grape cuttings/plants for a small plot as an experiment in table grape growing.  The area I'm in, near Walla Walla Washington, is becoming quite a wine growing region.  As I child I lived in Somerset West near Cape Town, and remember buying Hanepoot from local farms.  They were very delicious table grapes.  Any contact info you could provide would be helpful.

Response:
Delicious table grapes indeed – and it shouldn't be too difficult for you to obtain vine fairly locally, I should think, if you look for it under the name muscat d'Alexandrie (posssibly also moscatel), as it is generally known around the world. Importing vines from South Africa, however pleasing to the authentic urges of nostalgia. would be expensive and probably illegal without a lot of paperwork and quarantine. But muscat d'Alexandrie is certainly grown as a table grape in California and elsewhere in the North-West of the USA, and a vine nursery (or which there must be many in Oregon and Washington, both famous for their wines) should be able to offer you something, or point you in the right direction. (If any reader can suggest something more direct than looking around, please let us know.)

From Jean-VIncent Ridon:
In the US, the FDA-approved name for the Muscat d'Alexandrie is Muscat de Alexandria.... (still it's closer to the original than 'liberty fries' are to 'French fries'...!
