And there's the matter of Distell's advertisements (and geographical problems) 23 August 2007
From Francois Koegelenberg: This question of Distell and winelists has prompted me to pull my proverbial keyboard closer. Never mind that our wine lists are a joke, have you seen the ads these Distell guys run? Firstly this old geezer jumps off a yacht where he reckons the Two Oceans meet. But on the label it clearly shows Cape Point, not Cape Agulhas. So I reckon he is lost, if not ‘moertoe’. Geography 101 might come in handy for Distell's marketers because their Sauvignon Blanc is not even close to Cape Point's, mind you. Then we have the Nederburg ad where the winemaker wanders round the vineyards and tastes the grapes, whereafter he tells the workers it is not ready for picking yet. Nederburg produces 1.1 million cases of wine according to the Platter, a hell of a lot of wandering for Mr Macici to do then, not to mention tasting grapes. I could go on but I’d rather spend my energy and time on a decent bottle of wine.....

From Mark: To quote: "The Nederburg Auction cuvées have improved dramatically in the time that Razvan Macici has been in charge of the cellars. The Private Bin D253 2005 (Sauvignon Blanc-Chardonnay) was particularly striking and the Bin R172 Pinotage 2001 equally impressive. The Bin R163 2001 (Cabernet Sauvignon) was comfortably one of the best wines of the tasting and the Bin R109 2001 (Cabernet-Merlot) one of the most refined blends. Two of the special selection Nederburg reds, the Bin R111 Cabernet Franc 2001 and the Private Bin Malbec 2001, are both worth a flutter on the day." Michael Fridjohn The Weekender 4 Augus. |
