That rare thing – a bargain pinot noir 4 April 2008

Has anyone else tried the Robertson (or got better suggestions)?

From Stewart Prentice:
In terms of sheer good value, Robertson Winery Pinot Noir '07 @R35 from Makro takes some beating. While I certainly don't have a great palate, a little acidity was the only downside I noticed, and virtually disappeared when paired with a creamy chicken pasta. I've paid a lot more for much worse over the years. I would really appreciate other opinions - I reckon this may be the bargain of the year so far. And perhaps worth keeping a few bottles for future reference.

From Poor Tom!:
Well the Bain's Kloof Touriga Nacional from Bergsig at R20 ( not too sure what it costs now, because there are rumours it went up to R50 due to the Veritas gold it got). An absolute beaut of a red!

From Johan Nel:
The Ingwe Amehlo 2003 is available from Winesense at R26.70 a bottle- a 4.5 star wine in Platter (as tasted by none other than Cathy van Zyl) - strongly Bordeaux influenced with lovely tobacco and leadpencil fragrances on the nose, rather atypical for the Helderberg area for lacking that unpleasant hint of sweetness the other producers so frequently manage to extract. One can only wonder what went wrong in the marketing of what should certainly have been a R100 plus product! Getting back to good pinot - and before Veilles Vignes accuses me of cheapskating it again - I won't lower my standards from the Vriesenhof 2005: worldclass, not cheap, but value for money even at R220+ (and one of the few pinots where you DO get what you pay for.)

From Dane Raath:
BWC Cathy Marshall Pinot Noir is my favourite bargain Pinot at around R100 in fine wine shops.

From Romulus:
Don't forget this one...Herold Black Sheep Pinot Noir 2005. R40 ex-cellar, cool climate, very elegant.

I'm most impressed at hearing of these bargain Pinots, particularly, and look forward to trying the Robertson and Herold, which I don't know. It often seems to me that the only reason for paying attention to winewriters' views is that they usually get to taste a much wider range than most winelovers do, but obviously we don't try everything. I think Grape should establish a permanent place on this website for people to write in about wines they particularly like, or think are a particularly good bargain. Watch this space. — TJ
