That Cavendish 1963
again 30 May
2008From Anne Davidson:
I have just been given a bottle of 1963 Cavendish port. I
have no idea how it has been stored in that time, so it
could be dreadful but hopefully I'll be in for a little
treat.
Andrew Fox:
I have just been given 4 bottles of Cavendish 63 by my
father, who has a vast collection, and was wondering the
value, not that im planning on really selling these, but you
never know! If anyone has any information on these then
please let me know.
Questions about this wine have cropped
up a few times, mostly coming from British people. Now we
have the coincidence of these two enquirers both having
'just been given' some of it (presumably not by the same
person). The brief answer is that it is the local equivalent
of a tawny port, and should still be rather nice to drink,
and is not really particularly valuable in monetary terms,
though it would probably be more so in South Africa.
To repeat the essence of what was
said before: Cavendish was
the British distributor for KWV, but was wound up a few
years back. Winemaker Alwyn Liebenberg's comment was that
this '"Port" was made by KWV, sold in bulk, bottled and
exported to UK. There is not a lot around in SA, Price
+/-R400, just for the vintage date. If I were you, just
drink it. Old SA Tawny style "port", high sugar. With this
high sugar and alcohol percentage it will survive for 40
years plus.'
