Tasting procedure

Grape's tastings of new releases are not done ‘blind’. With often a widely varying range in one line-up – from simple quaffers to serious long-termers – we feel that major mistakes could too easily be made in a blind tasting. Better assessments can be made here, we think, if the tasters know something of the wine’s background, the winemaker’s intentions, the market aimed at, etc. Further, especially in cases of controversy or doubt, the development of the opened wine over a day or so (or even accompanied by food) can be monitored by at least one of the tasters – this is a major advantage of this methodology.

The tasters
The wines are normally tasted as a group by the regular Grape team of Tim James (TJ), Angela Lloyd (AL) and Cathy van Zyl MW (CvZ), together with a guest taster.

We aim to avoid the blandness of simply an average of the scores given by the tasters. Final ratings are reached by agreement, with any significant dissent recorded. The prices indicated are approximate retail, except when indicated as ex-farm (f).

Note to producers: If you wish us to include your wines in our tastings, please contact Angela Lloyd to arrange delivery.
