A true regional upliftment scheme 5 March 2007 First Drostdy-Hof bursaries awarded Sometimes the wine-industry’s ‘empowerment’ efforts seem a little up in the air, but Distell’s latest initiative looks firmly grounded in regional reality and a hands-on stance in the wine industry. The first recipients of the new Drostdy-Hof bursary scheme have strong links with that popular wine brand. They are three aspirant chemical engineers studying at the University of Stellenbosch, Thapelo Mokomele, Clarence McClune and Royston Moses. The bursaries – ‘aimed (mainly) at helping young people from the Tulbagh, Wolseley and Gouda communities’ – also provide recipients the opportunity of gaining practical experience, working for Distell during holidays and after completion of studies. Clarence McClune, matriculated in Wolseley and is completing his final year of study in chemical engineering. Royston Kyle Moses comes from Athlone and Thapelo Mokomele from Gugulethu. Both are first-year students.
