Medals and muscadel magic 16 June 2008

Association’s annual awards for these unique fortified dessert wines

At the recent Trophy Wine Show public tasting, the inclement Cape weather was the perfect excuse for the admiring individuals that certainly weren’t going to give the Nuy Winery’s stand a miss. The Museuem-class trophy-winning 1998 White Muscadel from this famous Worcester muscadel stalwart was the ideal elixir for the night. And then there was the 2003 and 2006 as well to try.

Just to underline the winery’s muscadel status, the enterprising and devoted SA Muscadel Association award the 2005 version a gold medal at its recent annual award ceremony. The 2006 Red Muscadel did even better, being given a platinum award (a cut above gold for packaging).

Also receiving platinum were Rietvallei Red 2007 and Rooiberg Red 2006.

Other gold medals were given to Badsberg - for red vintages 2003, 2005 and 2006; De Wet for red 2006; Uitvlucht Montagu red 2005; Jonkheer Bakenskop white 2007 and Orange River white 2007.

At the event, chairperson Henri Swiegers - who made the Badsberg winners - awarded honorary membership to long-time chair Swepie le Roux. Le Roux has spent years promoting South Africa’s unique sweet fortified wine. He said the wines are priced too low in the market, which may be the reason for the lack of interest.
