Bully for Boplaas 23 June 2008 Calitzdorp producer's 'ports' top the Challenge Carel Nel’s Boplaas Cape Tawny non-vintage won this year’s NMK Peter Schulz Sappa Port Challenge as the best port-style wine judged in the competition. The same producer took the two top spots in the Cape Vintage class with the Reserves of 2005 and 2006. (Boplaas Cape Tawny 1980 recently won the Old Mutual Wine Trophy as best museum-class port.) Neighbouring De Krans came second in the Cape Tawny category, while Landskroon 2003, Bredell’s 2003 and De Krans 2006 were runners-up in the Cape Vintage class. In the Cape Ruby class, Du Toitskloof and Boplaas shared first place, and Bredell 2004 won the Cape LBV class. The Challenge, arranged by the South African Port Producers’ Association, has been running annually for many years. This years the judges comprised Christine Rudman, Colin Frith, Cathy van Zyl, Meryl Weaver with Bennie Howard as adjudicator and Dave Hughes as convenor.
