More from the International Wine Challenge 21 June 2007
The trophies are announced (not much
coming Capewards) Following on the announcement of the medallists in this year's International Wine Challenge (which bills itself as 'the world's largest wine competition'), the national and internation trophy winners have been announced. Out of the 260 gold medal winners 84 wines were selected to win a Trophy. With not a great deal of interest for South Africa (France, Australia and Portugal picked up the most), the most prestigious local award was the International Viognier Trophy, which went to Fleur Du Cap Viognier Unfiltered Limited Release 2006. The International Pinotage Trophy went to the Groot Constantia Pinotage 2005, and the Trophy for a South African Red to La Motte Pierneef Shiraz Viognier 2005. Incidentally, anyone looking at the results announced on the IWC website home page might be surpised to see it declared that Emilio Lustau is a South African producer which has won trophies for the last two years – but in fact that is simply because they don't seem to have discovered that the suffix in the name 'Emilio Lustau S.A.' does not really mean that this illustrious sherry producer comes from South Africa. According to its producer, Distell, Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Viognier Limited Release 2006 is due for release later this year and will retail at around R96 per bottle. • See our earlier report on the SA medal winners
