Veritas showers medals 16 October 2007

Results from South Africa’s largest competition

The country’s largest, and for consumers probably most significant, wine competition has announced the results of its 2007 judging. The awards were presented at a ceremony in Cape Town this last weekend.

Vital overall statistics tell us that 1904 wines were judged – a number up 231 over last year’s entry. Judging took place over four days, conducted by sixteen panels of seven judges each, from a pool of over 100 local judges and nine international ones; the largest class was Shiraz with 220 wines, followed by Sauvignon Blanc (209) and Cabernet Sauvignon (204).

Unusually, Veritas gives medals at four levels, leading to a situation where 70 percent of the wines entered were rewarded with a medal of some kind this year – 40 percent of them fourth-level bronze. Just two percent won double-gold (that is 44 wines), five percent won gold (101 wines) and 23 percent silver (447 wines).

Mega-company Distell won (with a number of different brands entered separately) six of the double-golds. A number of producers each won two: Bon Courage, Boplaas, Nederburg, Nuy, Saronsberg and Spier.

A list of the winners of the top level of awards is given below. Full results are available on the Veritas website - including a list of medal winner arranged according to producer, whereby an inevitable curiousity can easily reveal such luminous names as Vergelegen, Tokara, Capaia, Waterford and Ernie Els huddled emabarrassedly (or is it embarrassingly?) around their bronzes and silvers.

• This year’s Veritas double gold and gold winners can be tasted at venues around the country (booking via Computicket):

Cape Town – 18 October 2007, Cape Sun Southern Sun

Johannesburg – 23 October 2007, Sandton Convention Centre

Durban – 6 November 2007, Deloitte head-office

Port Elizabeth – 8 November, Squires Restaurant

COMMENTS

From Mark:
Strange indeed. It would be interesting to see if they have more entries than the Trophy Wine Show.
I note Steenberg got none.Did they submit?

Oh yes – Veritas always gets many more entries than TWS (Michelangelo also gets more); Veritas this year had nearly twice as many entries as TWS (making it no doubt an even more lucrative affair). It seems unlikely that Steenberg entered. –Ed

From Poor Tom:
In vino veritas - in wine there is truth! That's the Veritas slogan, which is a damn good one to have. Many winos won't agree and nor will the folks hanging around lamenting over their fine showing of bronze medals, but maybe they all should start asking a few questions rather than muttering into their 'Best Ever with Steak' red blends. It's a competition and somedays the wines don't show too well and some wines are not show-stoppers to start off with (and that's the reason why some folks don't enter Veritas or the SA Young Wine Show - due to the fact that their wines might not perform well enough to command that sky-high price tag!) Veritas is good - international judges, blind tastings (the wines are even poured for tasters), winemakers who taste, and audited results. Sure some folk didn't do too well, but that's why there's the competition and next year (you can even re-enter wines winning gold!). For Mr Public, the proposition of opening a great bottle of double gold medal Muscadel and a lekker silver medal Sauvignon Blanc is a good one.
