More recognition for Cluver's riesling 25 October 2007 International Riesling Challenge results announced The 8th Canberra International Riesling Challenge results have been announced. This year, at last a South African wine rated highly enough to be allowed to win the South African High Commission Trophy for Best South African Riesling. Paul Cluver is arguably the Cape’s most consistent producer of good riesling in both dessert and drier styles, and won the trophy for its Noble Late Harvest Riesling 2006. (The wine, which also won five stars for the 2008 Platter Guide is perforce known in South Africa as 'Weisser Riesling' because of the law which reserves the name 'riesling' for crouchen blanc.) Overall winner of the Challenge was another sweet wine of 2006, from one of the most prestigious wineries in Franken, Germany, the Weingut Juliusspital Iphofer Julius-Echterberg Riesling Beerenauslese 2006. Other awards were made for the best of various regions, mostly in New Zealand and Australia. The best Southern Hemisphere Riesling was an Australian: Orlando Wines St Helga Eden Valley Riesling 2002 • Full results available on the Challenge website
