Toast to the passing of an enthusiast
Lannice Snyman’s role in South African culinary culture will live long after her sad death yesterday.
She wasn’t a wine writer, judge or ‘anorak’. But, as an international food writer and publisher, she knew very well which wine would enhance any of the dishes that came under her expert mind’s eye. Like all truly talent people in the creative business of food and wine, Lannice Snyman knew the technicalities better than most, could easily negotiate the cerebral arguments about matching, pairings and juxtapositioning. Yet - and this is a lesson - she treasured and promoted the ultimate aim of all such endeavours more than anything: the true people pleasures of the table.
Enthusiasm about what chefs (can) do and winemakers (should) achieve is what made her such an important person in South African cuisine. This was why, when there was a really important wine event (launch, assessment), Lannice and husband Michael would be there too. We, of the food and wine fraternity, wouldn’t expect it any otherwise.
Her many fine publications about food (own writings and that of others), undertaken with scrupulous professionalism, will remain important documents of our unique southern African culinary culture.
*To Michael Snyman, daughters Courtney and Tamsin: we all share your loss and extend our sympathy.

Re: Toast to the passing of an enthusiast
It's true that people will always have something to do to uplift his self and be a hero to other people. That's human nature and I guess they will pursue their plans even if it will ruin their dignity as a person.I have heard of adults attending high school, but went several steps beyond that. Guerdwich desired to play basketball and be renowned for it so badly he signed up as a 15 year old named Jerry Joseph at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. He was a great player in his actual high school days and I speculate it wasn't enough. He had to experience again the glory days, until somebody tipped off authorities about his little scheme. His actions actually expense the basketball team to have to forfeit the complete season, no matter how good they were or weren't without Guerdwich.
